How do I know if I have encountered a scam?

How do I know if I have encountered a scam? The best way to verify that an ad is real is to talk with the seller by phone, and trust your instincts! If its too good to be true, or if something does not seem right, it probably isn't. Never send money to a buyer unless you are certain that you trust the buyer. If you have any questions about an ad please contact us here at The Maine Marketplace by email at support@themainemarketplace.zendesk.com. When browsing through the Dog category, be aware of sellers that are from out of state, do not supply a home phone number, or have prices that seem very low. NEVER send money without seeing the pet IN PERSON first. Scams are easy to spot if you look for the warning signs. The following is an example of a scam that is used very often on internet classified ad sites:

Hey, Is the your listed item on themaine still available for sale ? How long have you owned it? Have you owned it from new? If not how many previous owner? Why are you selling it? In your opinion, what sort of condition is it? Any available photo? How much are you asking for it? I will convey you with Certified Check or Personal check. Stay Well, Fred.

Hey! My financial clerk he has mail out the payment to you, I just want to update you that i had just read from my Clerk ,That there is a mistake,Because he was informing me that he sent out the sum of $2,000 to you instead of him to send you the amount for the item am purchasing from you,I was so mad at him when i hear this because i don't know if my money will be safe when you get it..And he will loose his job if i couldn't retrieve my money back . I want you to send the left of the funds after deducting the money for the item,Plus extra $40.00 for yourself for taking your time and your effort and wire the rest via western union to my Engineer who wants to help me with some plumbing works the same day you receive the check...I just don't know what to do because i am totally confused. Can i have confidence and faith in you toward the transaction ? 1) Can i trust you with the money? 2) Can you wire the rest of the funds to the Engineer the same day you received and cashed the cheque? Stay Well..

Another common scam can appear in an email looking similar to this:

Hello, Good day to you!am interested in purchasing your item without no further delay, but first? What is the final price of the item? Will you be accepting a US certified Cashiers Check or Postal Money order? Also i will be using my private shipping company to pickup the item, but the payment you are going to receive will include some excess fund which you are to send to the shipping company that will come for the pickup of the item,so here are the questions i will like to asked you below. 1.Can i trust you with the money? 2.Will you be able to wire transfer the excess the same day you receive the check or money order ? 3.Will you be available when the shipping company will be coming for the pickup? 4.Is the working condition of the ITEM okay? 5,Is the item still available? 6.Can i take you for your words? Contact me with the present state of the item and your contact information to mail out the payment to you as soon as possible.Name you want on check: Home Address: City:State: Country: Phone Number/Office Number
