Art and Industry in the Saco River Valley

From the founding of the cities on the Saco in the 17th century, to the creation of fine and decorative arts in the early 19th century, to the booming factories of the later 19th and 20th centuries, to the arts and manufacturing traditions that endure today, the energy, creativity, and industry of this place will come to life. Winslow Homer and the Poetics of Place

This exhibition will showcase 20 works from the museum's collection of Winslow Homer watercolors and oils on canvas. The exhibition will feature paintings understood to be national treasures, such as Artists Sketching in the White Mountains (1868) and Weatherbeaten (1894) as well as The Sharpshooter (1862). Location: The Portland Museum of Art, 7 Congress Square. Our Positive Bodies: Mapping Our Treatment, Sharing Our Choices

Created in Nairobi, Kenya, by the Trust for Indigenous Culture and Health in 2004, this exhibition explores "body mapping," a technique devised to help HIV-positive women cope with the fact that they were likely to die prematurely and leave their children behind. In body mapping, life-size silhouette self-portraits express the feelings, memories, treatment and identities of those likely to die of AIDS. From inspirational Civil War quilts made by local Ladies Aid Societies in 1864 to a brightly-colored 1880s crazy quilt with a secret pouch, there are more than 40 quilts of varying sizes and patterns in the Museum's permanent collections. Admire a selection of 15 of these practical and beautiful masterpieces from the 18th to 20th centuries and learn the stories they have to tell. Millinocket Memorial Library Announces Summer Reading Programs

Water is the theme this summer at the Millinocket Memorial Library. Children will explore the world of water and water fun through stories and other activities. Make a Splash, READ! is open to children of all ages and abilities. Children may participate if someone reads to them. Older children are encouraged to join the program Make Waves at Your Library. The library will offer various programs and activities throughout the summer. Registration for the reading programs is June 1 through June 18. The 6-week programs begin on June 21. Although his art has appeared in our exhibitions numerous times, this is the museum's first exhibition showing a broad range of Nicoletti's work. Featured are paintings and drawings from the museum's collection, from other museums and private collections, and from Nicoletti himself. The catalog includes an essay by the eminent art historian Jeffrey Muller.
